Young Glendale girls squad looking for big things with new coach.

FLINTON — After 15 years at the helm of the Glendale girls basketball team, John Matchock hung up his whistle at the end of last season.

That means the Lady Vikings will be under the direction of Kurt Mattern.

Mattern has been coaching for 42 years, including the last 15 at the Division III level with both Penn State Fayette and St. Vincent College. He is the dentist at SCI Houtzdale and wanted to coach closer.

Glendale has just three letterwinners back in senior Makenzie Lukehart and juniors Molly Mulhollen and Brooke Smeal.

The Lady Vikings have just 11 girls on the team and will not play a junior varsity schedule this year.

Along with the letterwinners the team includes seniors Shyann Beatty, Riley Gabrielson and Kristen Hewitt, along with juniors Sydney Lumadue and Jamie Wolfe, sophomores Debbie Downs and Madison Lukehart and freshman Olivia Reese.

Mattern says he hopes his letterwinners step up and lead what is a very young team with inexperience.

The Lady Vikings will also need to avoid injuries with such a small roster.

Mattern says he has changed most of the plays and schemes that Matchock instituted during his time as coach.

“We have changed everything,” said Mattern. “Mr. Matchock did a great job with the program for years.”

The Lady Vikings, which went 10-13 last season, falling in the District 6 playoffs to Williamsburg, will have to fill the hole left by leading scorer Cierra O’Shell.

O’Shell averaged 12.1 points per game last season and is now playing at Penn State DuBois.

Makenzie Lukehart averaged 7.8 points per game, including 14 three-pointers. Mulhollen had a 2.8 ppg average, while Smeal averaged just over one point per game.

Mattern said filling the holes left by O’Shell, along with Lauryn Clarkson, Meghan Krepps, Amber Matier and Meghan McClellan, will be impossible.

“You really can’t (fill those holes),” said Mattern. “We hope Makenzie Lukehart can become our leader.”

So far Mattern says that his girls have a great attitude and have been working very hard. Their goals are set high and they want to win.

Assisting Mattern is Nichole Heitsenrether.

Glendale opens the season on Tuesday, hosting St. Joseph’s Academy.
