NB grounds out win over Vikings by Todd Irwin

FLINTON — It started raining harder and the temperature dipped below 40 degrees at Glendale’s Dr. Roy F. Baker Athletic Field.

It wasn’t good weather for passing, and neither Glendale nor Northern Bedford could get a passing game going.

So the Black Panthers’ running attack took over in the second half of a tied game. The Panthers ran for 139 yards in the second half and scored two touchdowns, including a 76-yard TD run by sophomore Cadin Ebersole late in the senior night game of a 20-7 win over the 1-9 Vikings.

“Glendale is way better than their record,” Northern Bedford coach Garry Black said. “I feel that we’re better than our record, but there are teams that don’t have good records. That’s a pretty good football team over there.”

“We were in position,” Glendale coach Richard Braniff said. “It was the same case as all year. We can’t get that third-quarter start and stop. The kids are hard workers, but we just can’t get the right bounce sometimes.”

The teams combined for six interceptions, four fumbles and 10 penalties. With the game tied, 7-7, the 4-6 Panthers held onto the ball as they moved 78 yards down the field in the third quarter.

Ebersole started the drive with a 9-yard run, and Dalton Smith finished it off with a 1-yard run into the end zone with 2:33 left in the third quarter.

“Dalton is a strong, physical kid,” Black said. “He got some nice big runs for us, running through arm tackles. He had some nice runs in the second half to get us going in the right direction.”

In between, two Glendale personal foul penalties helped the Panthers, much to the chagrin of the home crowd.

Glendale sophomore Colt Bickford, a 6-4, 260-pound lineman, set the Vikings up twice with great field position as he recovered two fumbles on back-to-back plays. He also recovered one of his team’s fumbles.

“He’s a good, young player,” Braniff said. “He’s got a pretty bright future, and there are a lot of nice athletes here at Glendale.”

Bickford’s first fumble recovery gave the Vikings the ball at the Glendale 45. The Vikings moved to the NBC 28, but Bentley Zimmerman picked off quarterback Jacob Jasper in the end zone.

Bickford recovered a fumble at the Northern 20 on the next play, but on fourth down, Case Donaldson intercepted Jasper.

Four plays later, Ebersole took the pitch from quarterback Thad Leidy, darted to the Panther sideline and raced the rest of the way for a 76-yard touchdown run with 3:18 left in the game.

“That one hurt,” Braniff said. “That was a stunner. It happened on the other side of the field. I won’t know what happened until I watch the film.”

“Last week, he blocked the extra point in overtime (of a 41-40 triple overtime win over West Branch), which helped us get the win,” Black said. “He is lightning in a bottle, and he persevered. Just a few minutes earlier, he was really frustrated with himself because the ball went on the ground. I’m really proud of Cadin.”

Neither team scored in the first quarter, but the Panthers drew first blood in the second quarter when Leidy connected with Colby Imler for a 35-yard touchdown pass at the 9:06 mark.

It looked like the Panthers would hold that lead going into the locker room at halftime as the Vikings lined up for a punt with 56 seconds left. But Seth Dudurich threw a 20-yard pass to Jasper on the fake punt for a first down.

After Jasper spiked the ball, hit threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Colton Leyo, who made a nice adjustment in the end zone and a great catch. The teams went to the locker room tied, 7-7.
