Reese walkoff slam propels Lady Vikings over Clearfield

Reese walkoff slam propels Lady Vikings over Clearfield

FLINTON — After missing her chance to give her team a win in regulation, Glendale’s Olivia Reese was given a second chance in Monday’s game against Clearfield.

And boy, did she make the most of it.

After grounding out with the winning run on second base in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the third out and send the game to extra frames, the Lady Viking sophomore came to the plate in the home half of the ninth with the bases juiced.

This time, Reese came up with the big hit, sending Lady Bison pitcher Emma Hipps’ 140th pitch of the game over the center field fence for a grand slam to give Glendale a 6-2 victory.

In both innings, Reese came to the plate after the Lady Bison chose to intentionally walk Lexi Mulhollen to give themselves a chance at an out at multiple bases.

“After that first time when she didn’t come through, she was pretty down on herself,” Glendale head coach Phil Barroner said. “I told her she would make up for it the next time that situation came up. I just didn’t think it would be in the same game.

“I’m happy for her. She squared the ball up. That was a big hit.”

The walkoff homer spoiled a masterful performance by Hipps, who scattered seven hits in her 8 1/3 innings of work. She walked three batters and struck out 13, the sixth time in nine starts she has collected double-digit strikeouts.

“Emma’s a little down on herself,” Clearfield head coach Derek Danver said. “But she threw another great game. She comes out night after night and gives us an opportunity to win every game.”

Hanna Noel got the ninth-inning rally started with an infield single. She was inserted in the starting lineup for this game on a Barroner hunch.

“I knew she had played a lot of summer ball with Emma,” Barroner said. “I thought since she had seen her and was familiar with her that she might have an advantage.”

Noel stole second and then moved to third on a bunt from Madison Lukehart, who came through with a pair of sacrifices in the game.

Breanna Vereshack drew a walk off Hipps to put runners on the corners, and Danver chose to intentionally walk Mulhollen to bring Reese to the plate with the bases loaded and one out.

Clearfield opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first.

Karly Rumsky singled, moved to second on a groundout and scored on Olivia Bender’s base hit.

The Lady Vikings answered in the third.

Breanna Vereshack reached on an error and tole second. After Mulhollen flew to right for the second out, Reese singled to score Vereshack and tie the game at 1-1.

Both teams scored a run in the fifth.

Alexis Bumbarger drew a leadoff walk off Mulhollen, advanced to second on a groundout and went to third on Kylee Hertlein’s single. After Hertlein stole second, Rumsky was hit by a Mulhollen pitch to load the bases for Morgan Cheek, who lifted a ball to right field to score Bumbarger on a sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the fifth, Lukehart hit a one-out single and moved to second on a groundout. Mulhollen then delivered a two-out base hit to score Lukehart and knot the game at 2-2.

The game then went all the way to the ninth with no further scoring despite several crucial, questionable calls in the late innings that gave each team opportunities to win.

But in all cases, the girls on each side were able to overcome the adversity and get out of the jams.

“There were a couple situations late in the game where things didn’t go our way,” Danver said. “The girls handled them well, better than I did. It was good to see them overcome those situations.”

Mulhollen got the win for the Lady Vikings after allowing just two runs in six hits in nine innings of work. She walked two batters and struck out two in her 105-pitch performance, that included a 3-pitch fourth inning.

Reese was 2-for-5 with five RBIs to pace the Glendale offense.

Lilley Vereshack had seven putouts in centerfield, including three straight in the third and fourth innings.

Bender and Casey English were both 2-for-4 for Clearfield, which slipped to 5-5 overall.

Glendale improved to 10-2. The Lady Vikings host Juniata Valley today.

Clearfield is also in action today, traveling to Huntingdon.
