Blue Devils keep it going with another ICC win

Blue Devils keep it going with another ICC win by Jon Fleck

FLINTON — It’s been a while since Bellwood-Antis has lost an Inter-County Conference game.

The Blue Devils started their string of consecutive ICC wins with a victory over Glendale late in the 2015 season and ran it to 29 straight Friday night with another win over Glendale.

Bellwood rolled up 411 yards of offense and held the Vikings to just 80 in a 48-0 win at Dr. Roy F. Baker Athletic Field.

Play of the game: Starting deep in their own end in the second quarter, Nick Plank caught a screen pass, headed to the Bellwood sideline, weaved his way around a couple defenders and bounced off two more for a 34-yard gain. The play kickstarted an 86-yard drive that put BA up 28-0 just seconds before halftime.

Players of the game: Zach Mallon and Plank each scored two touchdowns. Mallon finished with 87 yards rushing and 46 yards receiving. Plank ran for 76 yards to go along with his 34 yard catch and run.

Most vital statistic: Bellwood held Glendale to minus 9 yards rushing.

Bellwood coach Nick Lovrich: “We won the game in our practices. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday were very business-like. The guys did what they’re supposed to do, and (Friday) they showed all the hard work paid off.”

Unsung hero: B-A offensive lineman Evan Pellegrine.

Lovrich on Pellegrine: “He’s our center, and the defensive tackle they have is 6-foot-6, 330 pounds. He out-weighs Evan by 50 pounds, but Evan did a great job against him. He knew it was going to be a challenge. He stepped up to that challenge and played a great game on both the offensive and defensive sides.”

Glendale coach Spank Trexler: “Obviously, Bellwood’s the cream of the ICC, along with a couple other teams. We knew it would be a tough challenge. They have a great program, great coaching staff. We just have to stay focused and get better every day.”

Notable: After losing a fumble on the opening possession of the game, Bellwood scored touchdowns all seven times it had the ball after that. Trevor Miller completed 7-of-12 passes for 115 yards and one touchdown. Bellwood starters were taken out of the game early in the third quarter after Plank’s second TD of the game put the Blue Devils up 34-0.

Records: Bellwood 2-0: Glendale 1-1.

Next Friday: B-A hosts Juniata Valley. Glendale hosts Everett.
