Vikings’ defense shuts down Everett by Tyler Kolesar

FLINTON — The Glendale Vikings went to 2-1 on the young season by taking down the Everett Warriors by a 6-2 final Friday night at Dr. Roy F. Baker Field.

Glendale scored early in the first quarter and held the Warriors to 61 total yards of offense for the entire night.

Play of the game: Glendale sophomore Gage Wright’s strip sack of Everett QB Malex Akers with less than three minutes remaining in the game, essentially sealing the game for the Vikings.

Player of the game: Glendale’s Tristin Rutter ran for 73 yards and the lone touchdown of the contest.

Unsung hero: Vikings wideout Baine Seilhamer hauled in two tough receptions, one of which he caught through a Warriors defender.

Most vital statistic: Glendale held Everett to 61 yards of offense, yet had five turnovers — four of which were fumbles.

Glendale coach Spank Trexler: “We played great defense. The coaches did a great job with the game planning this week and they were very prepared with everything. With the injuries that we’ve had — and when you lose one or two players — it put us in a little bit of a scramble on what we could do. So we sort of had to adjust as the game went by. But the kids hung in there and did what they needed to do.”

Everett coach Dave Lightner: “We got some positive yards this week. We got a bit of a run game going and we changed some things up over this past week. So we got that going and the kids kept fighting hard. We caused some turnovers on defense and we moved the ball sometimes on offense. But we’re just shooting ourselves in the foot with costly penalties and costly mistakes so we’ve got to clear those up.”

Notable: Glendale only allowed four first downs on the night — three of which were in a single drive … In the loss, Warrior running back Cameron Mellott rushed for 96 yards on 18 carries … Glendale fumbled seven times, losing four of them. … The Everett defense had six tackles for loss for negative 14 yards.

Records: Glendale (2-1), Everett (0-3)

Next week: Glendale visits West Branch. Everett hosts Bellwood-Antis.
