Tussey holds off Glendale, remains unbeaten by Jon Fleck

FLINTON — Leading Glendale 18-0 with the ball to start to the second half, undefeated Tussey Mountain looked to be on its way to an easy win.

The Titans lost their third fumble of the game early in the third quarter, which Glendale quickly turned into a touchdown to make it an 18-7 game. The Vikings followed with a field goal and second touchdown, but the 2-point conversion failed, leaving Glendale down 18-16.

Tussey responded with a three-play, 51-yard TD drive and got the 2-point conversion for a 10-point edge and held on for a 26-23 win Friday night at Roy F. Baker Field.

Plays of the game: On Tussey’s first play from scrimmage after Glendale cut it to 18-16, Kaden Lucko broke through the middle of the Vikings’ defense for a 40-yard gain. Two plays later, QB Matthew Leonard faked to Lucko up the middle and scampered around left end untouched for a 5-yard touchdown that put Tussey up 10 with four minutes left to play. In the first, Lucko blocked a Glendale punt that Nicholas Brumbaugh scooped up and returned 18 yards for a score.

Players of the game: Lucko ran for 108 yards through the middle of the Glendale defense. Tussey successfully used Lucko as a decoy as well. Jared Sipes ran for 137 yards and a TD. He also caught a 20-yard TD pass from Leonard.

Unsung hero: After gaining just 26 yards in the first half, Glendale’s Seth Dudurich finished with 130 yards and a touchdown running out the wildcat most of the second half.

Glendale coach Spank Trexler: “Seth has really good vision. Running from the wildcat allowed him to pick and choose where he wanted to run. I think that played to our strength a little. Our line was able to get better leverage on the blocks. He really took over in the second half.”

Tussey coach Anthony Sottasante: “We had turnovers and penalties in both the first half and second half. We haven’t done that all year. Honestly, we didn’t have a good week of practice, and I think it spilled over into the game. We did what we had to do at the end. You have to give them a lot of credit. They’re 5-2 for a reason, and I think they’re getting better every week.”

Most vital statistic: After gaining 34 yards on its first drive of the game, Glendale managed just 13 yards and one first down the rest of the first half. The Vikings gained 260 yards to climb back in the game in the second half.

Trexler on the season: “The kids have high expectations. They took it upon themselves at halftime to come out and play better. It’s another step in learning to overcome adversity. They all know how to do it individually, but as a group, they’re learning how to pick each other up. That’s the kind of team we’re evolving in to. We’re not big on moral victories, but we’re making strides.”

Notable: Tussey lost three fumbles and turned the ball over on downs twice.

Records: Tussey Mountain (8-0); Glendale (5-3).

Next week: Tussey hosts Bellwood-Antis; Glendale entertains Juniata Valley.
