Glendale seniors come up big in win over Harmony by John Matchock

FLINTON — Glendale and Harmony squared off in Flinton on Senior Night and for the first half, the Owls kept the Glendale offense in check.

The third quarter saw the Vikings come out, dominate the game, and send the seniors out with a win by a score of 81-55.

The first quarter saw both squads trade baskets and turnovers.

Neither team could gain any momentum.

The first quarter ended with a 15-15 tie, but also saw each team commit five turnovers. Both sides struggled from the field, and Glendale also from the foul line going 2-of-8.

The Vikings were able to put some distance between them and the Owls in the second quarter.

Ryan Sinclair scored 10 of this 19 points in the frame, which helped give his team a 34-27 lead at halftime.

Daniel Rorabaugh and Jayden Westover kept Harmony in the game scoring 12 and 8 points, respectively, in the quarter.

The third quarter saw a different Viking team take the floor.

Senior Josh Potutschnig started to heat up, scoring 13 points in the quarter. Fellow senior Jacob Jasper contributed 7 points, but dished out numerous assists. Jasper finished the night with 14 points, but more impressive he led his team with 13 rebounds and 14 assists.

The two seniors sparked a Glendale 28-point quarter that put distance between them and the pesky Harmony team.

Glendale started the third quarter with their full court press and was able to create numerous turnovers and easy layups.

“We increased the tempo,” said Vikings head coach Steve Sinclair. “We used our press to create turnovers and layups. We increase our intensity.”

Harmony scored 8 points in the quarter — all by Jordan Schneider.

“Glendale came out on fire,” said Harmony head coach Matt Woods. “They started hitting outside shots, which opened up their inside game. Steve had them prepared. He is a phenomenal coach.”

The fourth quarter played out evenly, but the damage had already done in the previous quarter.

Both sides subbed numerous times to get others into the game since there was no JV contest.

Potutschnig ended the game with 27 points.

“Josh is fundamentally sound,” Coach Sinclair said. “He is a great shooter. He also does a great job at creating turnovers.

“Josh and Jacob do a great job with our press. Jacob is a phenomenal athlete. He is a constant player.”

Rorabaugh and Westover led Harmony with 18 and 16 points respectively.

“Both are phenomenal athletes,” said Coach Woods. “They always try to improve. They give 100% every game.”

Glendale still has two home games left, but Coach Sinclair had nothing but praise for his four seniors Nick Blake, Jasper, JJ Kitko and Potutschnig.

“They have played hard the past four years,” he said. “They have been enjoyable to coach. They work hard and are leaders on the court.”

Harmony (1-19, 1-14 Moshannon Valley League) has no time to rest as they head to West Branch today.

Glendale (12-10, 5-2 MVL) will next take the court with a home game against Mt. Union on Friday night.
