Glendale gets past West Branch 5-3

Glendale gets past West Branch 5-3

ALLPORT — Glendale’s Lexi Mulhollen threw just 67 pitches on Wednesday afternoon in a 5-3 victory over nemesis West Branch.

Mulhollen had just two strikeouts in the game, but got nine flyouts and seven groundouts to earn her 10th win of the season.

“Strikeouts have been low, but we cut the pitch count down,” said Lady Vikings head coach Phil Barroner. “And, West Branch is a good hitting team, so if you can keep anybody like them down, it’s definitely a feather in the cap.”

Glendale put two runners on in the first inning as Mulhollen and Olivia Reese led off with back-to-back singles.

West Branch starter Emma Miller got two groundouts and a strikeout to strand both runners.

In the second inning, the Lady Vikings got off to another hot start.

Chloe McElheny doubled to start the frame. Kyla Campbell followed with a single before Madison Lukehart tried to put down a bunt to bring home McElheny.

West Branch threw to first on the play, but threw right back to catcher Elishea Reed, who tagged out McElheny for the out.

Breanna Vereshack singled to plate Campbell, before Mulhollen doubled home Lukehart to make the score 2-0.

Vereshack came home on an RBI single from Olivia Reese, while Mulhollen was plated by an Alaney Vereshack ground out to make it 4-0.

“That seems to be the story of our losses this year,” said West Branch head coach Dennis Arnold. “Penns Valley had a five-run first inning. Glendale had a two-run and three-run inning against us last time, and today they have the four-run inning.”

“I thought Emma pitched well. Glendale put the bat on the ball, and they had some blooper hits, but you have to give them credit for putting it in play.”

“Defensively, I thought we were solid. Hitting, we were okay. We made a little rally there, but we just couldn’t string anything together. We just need to be a little more patient.”

The Lady Warriors finally found a groove in the bottom of the third inning, as Mallarie Maines blooped in a one-out single. Morgan Glace singled, then moved to second on a wild pitch.

Both runners came home on a Bri Bone double into right field, cutting the lead to 4-2.

Bone stole third base, then came home on an RBI groundout from Reed to make it 4-3.

Mulhollen got the next batter to fly out to end the threat.

Glendale got one of the runs back in the top of the fourth, as Mulhollen singled with two outs. Reese singled to moved her to second before an Alaney Vereshack base hit brought home Mulhollen to put the score at 5-3.

“When you are on the road and you get an opportunity early, you have to try and score,” said Barroner. “Once they settle in and get comfortable, it’s tough.

“We have a lot of trouble with West Branch. To be able to come in here and hold them to three is something I am definitely excited about.”

Mulhollen finished off the game by sitting the Lady Warriors down in order in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.

“Glendale is one of the top teams in our league and in the district,” said Arnold. “If we can take anything from it, we were in the game.

“We just have to find a way to get past that, especially against these guys.”

Bone finished the day with two hits.

Glendale had three hits each from Mulhollen and Reese.

“We were hoping that by May we would be able to start hitting the ball,” Barroner. “We haven’t had 1-4 put together a day yet, and today we got a little closer to it.

“Hopefully, in a couple of weeks we can really be rolling.”

The Lady Vikings improved to 12-2 overall and 8-1 in the ICC. Glendale travels to Williamsburg on Tuesday.
