CURWENSVILLE

The Vikings pounded out 11 hits and got 6 2/3 innings of shutout baseball from starting pitcher Lance Westover.

Westover allowed just four hits on the day before getting close to his pitch limit with one out in the seventh. He was relieved by Nick Blake, who got two quick outs to set the final.

“Lance pitched a heck of a game,” said Glendale head coach Ray Berger. “I couldn’t ask for anything better. He came out there and his head was in the game. He did what he needed to do.”

The Vikings jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Josh Potutschnig singled and moved to second on an error.

Westover plated Potutschnig on a single into left, while Westover later scored on an Austin Hammerle single to make it 2-0.

Ben Kasaback doubled, before Blake walked to load the bases.

That walk chased Tide starter Shane Sunderlin from the game. Christian Bakaysa relieved him and got a double play to end the threat.

Glendale scored again in the top of the third, as Westover led off the frame with a walk before moving to second on a single by Hammerle.

Westover eventually came home on another error by the Tide, making the score 3-0.

“We didn’t make plays at the beginning of the game and it cost us some runs,” said Curwensville head coach Tom Harzinski. “You aren’t going to win any games if you can’t score runs either.”

Westover allowed two of his four hits in the first inning, but the Tide left both stranded.

The Viking senior helped himself in the top of the fourth, knocking in a run to make it 4-0.

That chased Bakaysa from the game and he was replaced by Jeremiah Farley, who got the final out of the frame.

Curwensville finally got a runner to third in the bottom of the fourth inning as Matt Brown doubled and moved to third on a groundout.

Keegan Wilson hit a shallow fly ball to right, but Brown didn’t tag up and Westover got out of the inning with a pop up to second.

“We are in a real bad funk right now and I’m not sure how to get out of it,” Harzinski said. “Westover pitched well. He threw a lot of strikes and kept us off-balance.”

Glendale scored its five final runs in the top of the seventh, led by a two-run double from Westover. Hammerle also had an RBI hit, while Ben Kasaback had a sacrifice fly. Ethan Cavalet scored on a wild pitch.

“The early lead helped definitely. We had some struggles earlier in the year hitting,” Berger said. “This was one game we actually came out and showed how well we could hit the ball. I’m proud of everyone.”

Potutschnig had two hits and scored three runs, while Hammerle had three hits and two RBIs. Kasaback had two hits, with a double, while Westover plated four runs and tallied three hits.

Glendale finished the season at 7-11.

Curwensville fell to 3-14 overall. The Tide host Clearfield on Monday.
