Big offensive showing leads Vikings over Pirates by Sam Kimmel

FLINTON — Glendale’s offense exploded as the Vikings dominated the Williamsburg Blue Pirates, 46-0, in the Inter-County Conference season opener, Friday night.

Defense wrote the narrative in the first quarter as both offenses struggled early on. Glendale’s offense was kick-started in the second quarter when junior running back Seth Dudurich snagged a red-zone screen before bouncing between defenders for a Vikings touchdown to make it 6-0.

Glendale senior Shane McMurray walked in a goal-line score to carry the early momentum into the closing minutes of the first half as the Vikings jumped to a 12-0 lead.

The Vikings playmakers kept Williamsburg off the field for much of the first half. The extra chances gave Glendale an opportunity to pad its lead in the winding seconds. The Vikings called a timeout just 34 yards away from another score just before halftime.

Senior quarterback Jacob Jasper hit a wide-open senior Colton Leyo to close out the first half as the Vikings went up, 19-0.

Williamsburg continued to battle with ball security to open up the second half, which gave the hot Vikings offense possession early.

Glendale’s Jasper scrambled through a collapsing pocket that forced the senior quarterback to cut through the Williamsburg secondary from sideline-to-sideline for an explosive 53-yard touchdown. Jasper’s second touchdown of the night stretched the Glendale lead to a 26-0 shutout with still 10:41 left in the third quarter.

The Blue Pirates struggled with ball security as they tried to chip away. Jasper was a playmaker on offense all night, but it was his impressive defense that helped close down the Williamsburg offense. The senior quarterback snagged a midfield fumble before juking down to the right sideline before being tackled inside the red zone.

Field goals stretched the lead to 32-0 late in the quarter before an interception by the Vikings’ Jasper gave the offense another chance to build on their lead with just under three minutes left. Determined to finish off what he started, Jasper punched in another rushing score at the goal line to close out the Vikings’ impressive third quarter, 39-0.

Williamsburg turnovers kept its offense off the field for most of the second half. The Vikings converted to a run-heavy offense to wind down the final quarter. Senior Shane McMurray didn’t let the scoring end there though when he capped off the night with a 75-yard rush down the Glendale sideline.

Glendale will look to continue its start to the season as it travels to Bellwood-Antis next Friday at 7 p.m. The Blue Pirates will look to bounce back next week at Claysburg-Kimmel.
