BELLWOOD-ANTIS HIGH SCHOOL: 47

Blue Devils erupt in 2nd quarter for rout by Scott Franco

BELLWOOD — For the first quarter, and part of the second quarter, Bellwood-Antis found itself in a tussle with Glendale on Friday in the second game of the high school football season for both clubs.

However, a Shawn Wolfe 53-yard punt return for a touchdown opened up the floodgates for the Blue Devils, who scored 26 points in the frame en route to a 47-6 victory.

That score made it 21-6 at that point, and then an equally just-as-big play followed when Alex Schmoke’s onside kick was recovered by the Blue Devils. Seven plays later, an Alex Frederick 3-yard touchdown run at the 5:33 mark made it 27-6.

“It did … it did surprise me,” Glendale coach Rich Braniff said when asked about the play. “That one falls on me. Situationally, should we have been expecting that? I wouldn’t think, but I should have been in their ear, reminding them of that.”

Bellwood (1-1) led 7-6 after one quarter despite the fact that Glendale quarterback Jacob Jasper racked up 156 yards passing in the quarter and seven first downs. Trent Walker’s 2-yard touchdown run and a Schmoke kick made it 7-0. Glendale fired back with a 65-yard touchdown pass from Jasper to Shane McMurray.

“We knew he was a good player,” Bellwood-Antis coach Nick Lovrich said of Jasper. “Last week (against Williamsburg) he did a great job of extending plays which allowed his receivers to get open. We really wanted to focus on him, contain him, get a good pass rush and finish plays.”

Wolfe put Glendale up 14-6 early in the second when he hit Andrew Hale with a 59-yard touchdown pass, followed by the Schmoke kick. At that point, Glendale had seven first downs to just two by Bellwood, and yet …

“We had a couple of key annoying injuries that made us shuffle around our already-depleted roster,” Braniff said when asked how the game got away from his Vikings in the second quarter. “We had some inexperienced guys playing positions that they were not used to, and then things unraveled from there.”

Even though Bellwood led 33-6 at halftime, the injury to Wolfe right around the six-minute mark of the second quarter quieted the B-A crowd as he was helped off the field. He did not play the rest of the night.

“We don’t think it is anything major, but we will see how he responds to treatment the next couple of days,” Lovrich said.

Backup Trevor Miller did not miss a beat. He engineered the next three scoring drives for the Blue Devils, which featured touchdown runs by Frederick, Nick Plank and John Kost. He also completed 4-of-6 passes for 84 yards and did not fumble the ball, though he was picked off once.

“When you are the backup quarterback, you have to be ready to go,” Lovrich said. “He played a little for us last year and tonight we had to use him. He stepped up and took command of that huddle. We are not afraid to use him.”

Even though Bellwood held Glendale to one first down and no passing yards after the first quarter, Braniff could at least feel pretty good from what he saw in his senior signal-caller.

“He has gained a lot of confidence just from last year,” Braniff said.

Game notes: Plank had an interception for Bellwood while Baine Seilhamer had one for Glendale. … Glendale had seven first downs in the first quarter and finished with eight. …Frederick and Kost combined for 22 carries 126 yards. … Bellwood is at Juniata Valley next week while Glendale is at Everett.
