Saldivar made several key plays to help lead the Warriors to a 28-26 win over Glendale on Friday night in an Inter-County Conference matchup.

“The first game we won, Luis made the big play,” Everett coach Winston Redman said. “Tonight, Luis made the play. He probably had two or three he could have made.”

Redman must have forgotten about Saldivar’s plays made prior to his game-sealing sack with 1:36 left to play.

Glendale (1-2 overall, 1-2 ICC) got to within 28-26 thanks to a 15-yard pass from Jacob Jasper to Baine Seilhamer. On the two-point conversion, Jasper rolled out to the left side of the pocket, pump faked and tried to shake several Everett defenders bearing down on him.

Saldivar didn’t cave and wrapped up Jasper for the sack.

“I had to do it for the team. I didn’t want to let anyone down,” Saldivar said. “It just came down to that. It feels amazing.”

Saldivar’s other plays were blocked punts and plays that Vikings’ coach Richard Braniff knew were the deciding factors.

Trailing 16-13 late in the third quarter, the Warriors had Glendale stopped at its own 39 and needing to punt. Vikings’ punter Cory Johnston, who was sporting a bulky brace on his left hand, bobbled a snap and regained it too late as Saldivar blocked it.

Five plays later with four straight runs, Everett (2-1 overall, 2-1 ICC) was in the end zone thanks to Macen Akers’ second rushing score of the night. The Warriors led 22-13 with 11:55 left in the game.

On its second possession of the fourth quarter, Glendale again was deep in its own territory. The Vikings again were forced to punt this time from their own 25, thanks to a 10-yard sack by Saldivar on third down. On the punt attempt, Saldivar not only blocked by punt by recovered it at Glendale’s 8-yard line.

Akers, who finished with 98 yards rushing on 18 carries, went into the end zone for the third time of the night on fourth down from the 6, which capped off Everett’s scoring for the night.

“We had mental letdowns at the wrong times and that pretty much sums it up,” Braniff said. “They (Everett) have a very nice quarterback. He hurt us and hurt us bad tonight. My hats off to him. He played an awesome football game.”

The Vikings fought until the end,which pleased Braniff.

Glendale opened the game with an efficient drive eating up 5:33 seconds of the first quarter. It was capped off with Jasper pulling the quarterback sneak behind his center.

Following the Warriors’ first score of the night and losing the lead, Glendale responded in a big fashion. Colton Leyo took the ensuing kickoff 80 yards to the house and the Vikings regained a lead they gave up just 14 seconds prior.

“The special teams I was really teed about it,” Redman said, “because I worked on it the last two days about squeezing the middle. What did they do? They came up the middle. We worked on that all week.”

The Vikings faced a fourth-and-14 from Everett’s 43 with 9:40 left. Jasper found Leyo for a strike down the far sideline and Leyo took it the rest of the way. Glendale was within 22-20 before Saldivar’s second blocked punt of the night.

“I think if they didn’t have 22 kids, they wouldn’t have worn down,” Redman said of the Vikings. “They made it a long night. I told the kids (his team) all week, ‘Against Bellwood, they had a couple of mistakes and hung right in there.’ If they wouldn’t have got tired, it might have been a different game.”
