Mulhollen clubs 100th career hit in Lady Vikings 18-0 win over Damsels

Mulhollen clubs 100th career hit in Lady Vikings 18-0 win over Damsels

HOUTZDALE — Since picking up career hit No. 98 in her first at bat the last time Glendale played Moshannon Valley on April 8, Lady Viking senior leadoff hitter Lexi Mulhollen has been hoping to bust through the 100-hit milestone.

She broke out of a mini 0-for-8 slump Tuesday against the Damsels, going 3-for-3 with four runs scored and a milestone-reaching double in the third inning to lead Glendale to an 18-0 win in a 3-inning game shortened by the mercy rule.

“I’m excited for her,” Glendale head coach Phil Barroner said. “She says she wasn’t trying too hard, but we were so far out on the front foot the last couple of games that I think she was trying to reach for it.

“I’m just happy for her to get there and now that we’re over the hump, maybe we can get moving a little bit.”

Mulhollen’s double was one of eight hits the Lady Vikings picked up in an 12-run third inning that saw Glendale send 17 batters to the plate.

“The 100th hit wasn’t a question,” Barroner said. “It found the gap. It was definitely a solid hit.

“But I’m more excited for the fact that for nine games it’s been someone different every game. That’s important to me. We haven’t had to rely on one bat or one glove. We’ve been solid up and down the lineup.”

That was certainly on display Tuesday as nine different Lady Vikings had at least one hit and four enjoyed multiple-hit games. That list included No. 9 hitter Breanna Vereshack, who has been the flex for the majority of Glendale’s games this year.

She was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a RBI against the Damsels.

“She puts a lot of work in,” Barroner said of Vereshack. “I know it’s very difficult to be the flex. She’s been very team-oriented and took on that role for us while still doing the work in the gym.

“For her to come out today and get three hits was big for her emotionally and for the team to see that it’s not that we have a weak link, it’s just what is best for the team at the moment.”

Glendale also got a big day from freshman Hanna Noel in the circle. Noel earned her first varsity win in her first varsity start, tossing two shutout innings, while giving up a hit and walking two. She also struck out two batters.

“I’m happy for Hanna,” Barroner said. “It was her first varsity start. To show that we can possibly go to her if we need to after having to rely on just one or two in years past is big. I know Lexi is going to get the ball in most situations and Kyla (Campbell) is normally the two, but to be able go to Hanna in any situation is huge.”

Vereshack pitched a scoreless third inning to preserve the shutout.

Glendale opened the scoring with an unearned run in the first inning, scoring on a dropped third strike.

The Lady Vikings tacked on five more in the second against Damsel pitcher Tori Gregg. Mulhollen, Alaney Vereshack and Campbell each had run producing singles, while Olivia Reese’s base hit knocked in two.

Glendale put the finishing touches on the 3-inning victory with 12 runs on 8 hits in the third. Only three runs off Gregg were earned as three Damsel errors prolonged the inning.

“I feel bad for Tori,” Mo Valley head coach Gary Godin said. “Hailey (Domanick) was sick and I didn’t have Emma (Kitko) loose, so I didn’t want to take her out. Tori just got tired, and Glendale is a good hitting team.”

Mulhollen and Breanna Vereshack each had two hits in the inning. Both had an RBI single, while Mulhollen also collected her milestone double that plated a run.

Alaney Vereshack and Lilley Vereshack added RBI singles, Campbell picked up an RBI on a bases-loaded walk and Reese added RBIs on a groundout and when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The rest of the Glendale runs scored on errors.

Reese paced the Lady Vikings with four RBIs. Mulhollen had three and Campbell and Alaney Vereshack both collected two.

Mo Valley did have a bright spot with the return of senior third baseman McKenzie McCoy, who missed the first seven games recovering from an injury sustained late in basketball season.

McCoy singled in her first at back back.

“She’s not back 100 percent, but she’s a senior and she said she could go,” Godin said. “It was nice to have her back in the lineup and at third. She makes all the plays.”

Chloe Blake added a double for the Damsels, who fell to 0-8 overall and 0-3 in the Moshannon Valley League.

Glendale improved to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in the MVL.

The Lady Vikings are back in action today, traveling to Williamsburg. Mo Valley visits Juniata Valley on Thursday.
